Frequently Asked Questions
When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.
How long do I have access to the course?
After enrolling, you have access to this course, all the resource library, access to the Private Facebook group, & monthly coaching for one (1) year from initial enrollment.
How does the Service Dog Certification Process work?
All teams, Fully trained as well as our Owner Trained Program have to pass the same written examination & practical Public Access Tests.
Details on the testing requirements, as well as guides on how to prepare for them are in the course instruction. Once you have finished the online course and you believe that you and your service dog are ready for the testing, call our office at (480) 205-6810 to schedule a date and time for our staff to coordinate the required tests.
If you are in the Phoenix Metro area, we highly suggest scheduling a private 1-on-1 training session prior to scheduling your testing just to have one of our trainers & coaches make sure that you and your service dog are ready for the testing.
How much does the final Certification costs?
Because of the staffing requirements and potential facility fees, the final certification test costs approximately $1,500 plus any travel expenses for our staff to travel to you. This certification is valid for 2 years.
How long does the training and certification process take?
That depends totally on you and your dog. The course is entirely self-paced. You can go through the entire course in a long weekend, but working with your pup through all the aspects may take much more time. There are some requirements that must be met prior to taking the certification exams:
1) You need to have purchased the Owner Trained Service Dog Program
2) The dog needs to be at least 12 months old at the time of testing.
3) The required 1,200 minimum hours of education & training must be fully documented and submitted to AZG.
4) The service dog application & proof of medical need must be submitted & cleared with AZG.
5) All vaccinations for the dog being testing must be up to date & proof submitted to AZG and approved. This includes Rabies, DHPP, & Bordetella vaccinations.
5) All certification fees & any travel expenses must be paid & cleared prior to scheduling the date & location of testing.
Realistically, if you are starting with a young puppy, there should be approximately 3-4 hours a day of training, 5 days out of the week for approximately 10-12 months (1,200-1,500 hours total).
If you start with an older more experienced dog that time can be drastically less, but must meet the minimum standards of training & education documentation.
Is Service Dog Certification Necessary?
Under the American's With Disability Act of 2010, better known as the ADA, clearly states that certification is not necessary a requirement for service dog access.
What the law states and what the case law in U.S. Courts require for documentation of training & service dog knowledge are two separate things. If you are denied access to a place that is open to the general public, and the issue escallates and leads to police or legal intervention, the courts will require proof of the medical need for a service dog; training instruction you received in regards your service dog; as well as proof that you can utilize the service dog for your particular disability and were safe for the general public. They require this to make sure that your claim has a valid legal basis. This same process is the same if someone in the public makes a false claim against you or your service dog saying that they got injured by your service dog. This situation has happened more times than you think in the past couple decades.
Our training & certification process has been upheld in several U.S. legal cases throughout the years and provides those assurances to protect your access rights.
Also, if you want to travel outside the U.S. for work or pleasure, the certification process does come immediately into effect and is required in most countries for entrance.
In summary, is certification required by Federal ADA law? The answer is not yet, but it's a good idea to fully protect your rights and your service dog's life.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes a 30 day money back refund policy. Refer to our Terms of Use Page for details. http://azg.teachable.com/p/terms
